What is a Dive Physical?
SCUBA diving is a physically demanding activity. A dive physical helps alleviate concerns about your health that could prevent you from enjoying your time below the surface.
HyOx isn’t just about hyperbaric medicine – we also practice undersea and dive medicine. We’re proud to be accredited by the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society and to be the official dive partner of Georgia Aquarium.
If you are a SCUBA diver or are looking to become certified, you have probably heard of Padi, the most recognized dive-training organization worldwide. Regardless of which certification course you take, safety comprises a significant portion of diver training. Padi’s number one safe diving practice is to “[m]aintain good mental and physical fitness for diving.”
A dive physical is one tool to help assess your safety for diving. At HyOx, our physicians and clinical staff provide existing and future divers with comprehensive physicals designed to assess dive fitness. Dive physicals provide peace of mind on the surface so you can be safe under the water.

A dive physical consists of a thorough medical and dive history review, a complete physical exam with an emphasis on neurological and ontological components, a respiratory evaluation including spirometry, a test that measures how much air you can breathe in and out of your lungs, a urinalysis, and other procedures deemed necessary by HyOx physicians.
