Scuba Dive Physicals
You don’t jump in the water without completing a safety check of your mask, BC, weight belt, and oxygen tank. But, when was the last time you had a safety check of your most important piece of diving equipment – you?
Since HyOx is accredited by the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society and serves as be the official dive partner of Georgia Aquarium, it shouldn’t surprise you that we take dive safety seriously. A dive physical is a specialized check-up to ensure that you are up to the physical demands of scuba diving.
During a dive physical, our physicians and clinical staff provide existing and future divers with comprehensive tests and evaluations designed to assess dive fitness. Why are they so important? Dive physicals provide peace of mind on the surface so you can be safe under the water.
What happens if the physical shows it’s not safe to dive? It’s never fun to learn that you can’t safely participate in an upcoming diving adventure. Fortunately, there are treatment options for many medical issues uncovered during a dive physicals, and patients can frequently dive safely once the problem or condition is addressed.
Watch as Jonathan Langham, DSO, Georgia Aquarium’s Manager of Dive Safety & Training, explains the importance of dive physicals.
Video transcription:
Dive physicals are very important to have. I’ve had some diver that have had their dive physical where they came back with some abnormal results, and they thanked me so much because of that. And, they were able to follow up with their doctor and say, “You know what? I shouldn’t be diving right now. I need to make sure that I get this taken care of first. That way I can go dive safely.”
