Inside a Large Hyperbaric Chamber
Does size matter? When it comes to hyperbaric chambers, we say, “yes.”
There are two types of hyperbaric frequently used: monoplace and multiplace. What’s the difference? Only one patient at a time can receive hyperbaric oxygen therapy in a monoplace chamber. However, a multiplace chamber can accommodate two or more patients for treatment. The chamber at HyOx can hold twelve patients plus a chamber tender during the dive.
Why does this matter? Patients typically slide into a monoplace chamber and have to lie down for the duration of the treatment. Monoplace chambers fill with 100% oxygen during a treatment. Since oxygen increases the risk for fire, several precautions must be followed. Patients are attached to a lead to prevent static electricity. If a patient has any issues during the treatment or needs to use the restroom, the treatment will be cut short. Also, these smaller chambers can exacerbate confinement anxiety or claustrophobia.
Multiplace hyperbaric chambers, like the one at HyOx, allow patients to walk into the chamber. If a patient uses a wheelchair or is in a stretcher, our staff helps push or roll the patient into the chamber. Our chamber fills with air, so there are fewer fire risks. We still have a strict list of allowable items and require patients to wear special scrubs for safety, but the risk is dramatically reduced. A doctor, nurse, or specially trained tender is always with the patients during treatment. If a patient needs something, our staff can help without interrupting the treatment. Patients can even stretch their legs during a treatment. We strive to make the treatment as comfortable as possible for our patients. Why? More comfortable treatments mean patients are more likely to follow their treatment protocol and heal.

The non-claustrophobic treatment environment has more space for you to move, sit up, read, work, or watch a movie. You can recline or remain in a hospital bed if needed. We even have a bathroom inside. Another added value is a physician, nurse, or technician is always inside the chamber to attend to your needs. It’s a benefit of HyOx’s multi-patient chamber that gives patients peace of mind.
