ALERT: Long COVID & Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Updated Nov. 1, 2022

Recent studies have shown the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on patients suffering from ongoing issues from testing positive for COVID-19. Lingering physical, cognitive and cardiac symptoms of chronic COVID or post-COVID conditions, commonly known as “long COVID,” may be mitigated with hyperbaric medicine delivering oxygen under pressure to diminish the long-term viral effects in the body on a cellular and vascular level, on the immune system and in the brain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there currently is no test to diagnose post-COVID conditions and there is a recognition people may have a wide variety of symptoms that could stem from other health problems.

HyOx Medical Treatment Center is monitoring the efficacy of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for long COVID patients (those experiencing symptoms for more than four weeks after testing positive) and conducting medical assessments on self and/or physician referred patients for hyperbaric medicine protocols. As of July 2021, “long COVID” can be considered a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Call HyOx to schedule an initial consultation and medical evaluation to see if hyperbaric oxygen therapy can help improve symptoms.

The following list of general, respiratory, heart, and neurological symptoms long COVID people most commonly report is taken from the CDC website:

General Symptoms

  • Tiredness or fatigue that interferes with daily life

  • Symptoms that get worse after physical or mental effort (also known as “post-exertional malaise”)

  • Fever

Respiratory and heart symptoms

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath

  • Cough

  • Chest pain

  • Fast-beating or pounding heart (also known as heart palpitations)

Neurological symptoms

  • Difficulty thinking or concentrating (sometimes referred to as “brain fog”)

  • Headache

  • Sleep problems

  • Dizziness when you stand up (lightheadedness)

  • Pins-and-needles feelings

  • Change in smell or taste

  • Depression or anxiety

Other symptoms

  • Joint or muscle pain

  • Rash

“Post-COVID-19 condition refers to a range of persisting physical, neurocognitive, and neuropsychological symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 infection. The mechanism can be related to brain tissue pathology caused by virus invasion or indirectly by neuroinflammation and hypercoagulability. This randomized, sham-control, double blind trial evaluated the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT or HBO2 therapy) on post-COVID-19 patients with ongoing symptoms for at least 3 months after confirmed infection…..”
