Intracranial Abscess

Print

An abscess in the brain is a life-threatening infection that requires surgery to drain the abscess (a localized collection of pus surrounded by inflamed tissue).

When combined with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, successful surgical outcomes are higher. According to the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society’s HBO2 Committee Report, a decrease in deaths can be achieved through early and accurate diagnosis using computer tomography (CT scans), minimally invasive surgery with CT-guided aspiration, and adequate antibiotic therapy.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy works to reduce cranial edema (swelling) and provide the body with an increased ability to kill bacteria.
